Adjusting Your Skincare Routine: Products to Use and Avoid

Moisturize religiously! Accutane dries your skin, so choose a rich, fragrance-free moisturizer, preferably one containing ceramides to support your skin barrier. Apply it twice daily, even if your skin feels oily.

Gentle cleansers are key. Avoid harsh sulfates and foaming agents; opt for creamy, hydrating cleansers like Cetaphil or CeraVe. Wash your face twice a day, using lukewarm water.

Sunscreen is Non-Negotiable

Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day, rain or shine. Reapply every two hours, especially if you’re spending time outdoors. Sun sensitivity increases significantly while on Accutane.

Products to Avoid

Ditch harsh exfoliants like scrubs and chemical peels. These can further irritate your already dry and sensitive skin. Avoid products containing fragrances, alcohol, and strong actives like retinoids or benzoyl peroxide–your skin is already undergoing significant change.

Consider your makeup. Opt for hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic makeup to prevent clogged pores. Remove makeup thoroughly every night before bed using a gentle cleanser.

Listen to your skin. If a product causes irritation or discomfort, discontinue use immediately. If you have concerns, talk to your dermatologist. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific needs.
