Always take doxycycline exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Swallow the tablets whole with a full glass of water, preferably on an empty stomach (at least one hour before or two hours after a meal), to maximize absorption. Avoid taking it with dairy products, antacids, or iron supplements, as these can reduce its effectiveness. A full course of treatment is necessary; do not stop taking it early, even if you feel better. Missed doses should be taken as soon as possible, unless it’s almost time for the next dose; never double up on doses.
Common Side Effects and Precautions
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and heartburn. Less frequent but more serious side effects include photosensitivity (increased sun sensitivity), so use sunscreen and protective clothing when exposed to sunlight. Doxycycline can also affect the effectiveness of oral contraceptives; discuss alternative birth control methods with your doctor. Inform your doctor about any existing health conditions, allergies, and medications you are currently taking, including herbal remedies. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are contraindications; consult your doctor before use.
Storage and Disposal
Store doxycycline tablets in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep them out of reach of children and pets. Dispose of expired or unwanted medication responsibly, following your local guidelines or returning them to a pharmacy for safe disposal.
