Interactions with Other Medications and Contraindications

Doxycycline can interact negatively with several medications. Avoid taking it concurrently with antacids containing calcium, magnesium, aluminum, or iron, as these can significantly reduce doxycycline absorption. This also applies to dairy products and some multivitamins. Space your doxycycline intake by at least two hours from these substances.

Interactions with Specific Medications

Strong interactions exist with oral contraceptives. Doxycycline may decrease their effectiveness, potentially leading to unplanned pregnancy. Consider alternative contraception methods while using doxycycline. Simultaneous use with methotrexate increases the risk of methotrexate toxicity. Consult your doctor if you take both. Warfarin interaction is also possible, potentially increasing bleeding risk, requiring careful monitoring of your INR.

Contraindications

Doxycycline is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to tetracyclines. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are also contraindications due to the drug’s potential harm to the developing fetus and infant. Use caution with children under 8 years old due to potential tooth discoloration. Pre-existing kidney or liver disease requires careful monitoring and potentially adjusted dosage.
