Interactions with Other Medications and Substances

Metformin can interact with several medications and substances, potentially altering their effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. Always inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal remedies you are taking before starting metformin.

Alcohol

Combining metformin with alcohol increases the risk of lactic acidosis, a serious and potentially life-threatening condition. Limit alcohol consumption while taking metformin, and avoid excessive drinking.

Contrast Media

Metformin should be temporarily stopped before and after procedures requiring intravenous iodinated contrast media. Your doctor will advise on the appropriate timing for discontinuation and resumption.

Diuretics

Diuretics, or water pills, can increase the risk of dehydration, which may increase the risk of lactic acidosis. Adequate hydration is crucial while using both metformin and diuretics.

Other Medications

Some medications, such as corticosteroids and certain antihypertensive drugs, can impact blood glucose levels and may require adjustments in metformin dosage. Your doctor will monitor your condition and adjust treatment as needed. This includes drugs influencing kidney function, as metformin is excreted by the kidneys.

Vitamin B12

Long-term use of metformin may reduce vitamin B12 absorption. Your doctor may recommend regular B12 level monitoring and supplementation, if necessary.
