Post-Administration Patient Care

Monitor the patient’s vital signs, including heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate, for at least 30 minutes post-administration. Observe for any signs of extrapyramidal symptoms like tremors, rigidity, or dystonia. These typically manifest within the first hour.

Managing Potential Side Effects

Should extrapyramidal symptoms arise, administer appropriate anticholinergic medication as per the physician’s orders. For nausea or vomiting, consider administering antiemetic medication if prescribed. Closely monitor the patient for any allergic reactions such as hives, itching, or swelling. If these occur, immediately stop the infusion and notify the physician.

Maintain hydration by encouraging fluid intake. Assess the patient’s level of consciousness and ability to swallow. Document all observations, interventions, and responses in the patient’s chart. Before discharge, provide clear instructions to the patient or caregiver on recognizing and reporting any adverse effects.
