Always read the patient information leaflet before using your inhaler. This provides detailed instructions specific to your inhaler type.
Check your inhaler regularly. Discard if damaged or if the expiry date has passed. The counter on your inhaler will show how many doses remain.
- Using a Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI): Shake the inhaler well before each use. Breathe out fully. Place the mouthpiece between your lips, and press down on the canister while inhaling slowly and deeply. Hold your breath for 10 seconds, then breathe out slowly. Wait 1-2 minutes between puffs if more than one puff is prescribed. Using a Breath-Activated Inhaler (BAI): Shake the inhaler. Breathe in slowly and deeply through the mouthpiece; the inhaler will release the medication as you inhale. Hold your breath for 10 seconds, and then exhale slowly. Using a Spacer: Using a spacer helps ensure the medication reaches your lungs. Attach the spacer to your inhaler and follow the instructions above for your inhaler type.
Rinse your mouth with water after each use to prevent oral thrush, a common side effect.
Cleaning your inhaler: Clean your inhaler regularly as directed in the patient information leaflet. Generally, this involves wiping the mouthpiece with a dry cloth. Proper storage: Store your inhaler in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Seek medical advice: If you experience any adverse effects or your symptoms worsen, consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
Carry your inhaler with you at all times, especially during times of increased risk for asthma attacks.
Regularly review your asthma action plan with your doctor or healthcare professional to ensure it’s up-to-date and you understand how to manage your condition.
