When to Seek Medical Attention After a Tick Bite

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience a severe allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or dizziness. This requires emergency care.

Contact your doctor within 24-48 hours if you develop a rash that expands beyond the bite site, especially a bull’s-eye rash characteristic of Lyme disease. Fever, chills, body aches, headache, fatigue, or stiff neck also warrant a call to your physician.

Symptoms Requiring Immediate Attention:

Symptoms such as difficulty breathing, severe headache, paralysis, or heart palpitations demand an immediate trip to the emergency room. Don’t delay seeking help in these situations.

Tick Removal and Prevention:

Properly remove the tick with tweezers, grasping it close to the skin. After removal, wash the area with soap and water. Save the tick for potential testing if symptoms develop. Prevention is key! Use insect repellent with DEET or picaridin, wear long sleeves and pants in tick-infested areas, and check yourself thoroughly after being outdoors.
