Avoid taking doxycycline with dairy products, antacids containing calcium, magnesium, or aluminum, or iron supplements. These substances can reduce doxycycline’s absorption, lessening its effectiveness.
Medication Interactions
Doxycycline can interact negatively with certain medications. Concurrent use with warfarin (a blood thinner) may increase bleeding risk. Similarly, it can interact with methotrexate, increasing its toxicity. Consult your doctor before combining doxycycline with other medications, particularly antibiotics, anticonvulsants, or oral contraceptives.
Herbal and Dietary Supplements
Be cautious with St. John’s wort. This herbal supplement can decrease doxycycline’s effectiveness. Avoid it during your treatment. Also, discuss any other supplements you take with your doctor before starting doxycycline.
