Limestone, predominantly composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), forms through various processes. Dolomite, in contrast, contains a significant amount of magnesium carbonate, with its chemical formula often represented as CaMg(CO3)2. It frequently forms through the alteration of pre-existing limestone, a process called dolomitization. Dolomite’s physical properties differ slightly from limestone; it’s often harder and more resistant to weathering. This makes it a valuable resource in construction and as a raw material for industrial processes. Distinct textures and limited fossil content characterize dolomite.
