Potential Side Effects of Doxycycline and Management

Doxycycline, while effective against malaria, can cause side effects. Common ones include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. These usually resolve with continued treatment but consider notifying your doctor if symptoms worsen or persist. Drink plenty of water to help minimize gastrointestinal upset.

Photosensitivity is another potential side effect; avoid prolonged sun exposure and use sunscreen with a high SPF. If you experience a sunburn, seek medical advice.

Less common but more serious side effects include yeast infections (oral or vaginal), and esophageal irritation. For oral thrush, antifungal medication may be necessary. Esophageal irritation usually improves with taking doxycycline with plenty of water and upright for 30 minutes. Reporting these to your physician is important.

Rare but serious reactions such as liver damage, blood disorders, and allergic reactions (including anaphylaxis) require immediate medical attention. If you experience unusual bruising, jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes), or difficulty breathing, seek emergency care.

Note: This information is for general knowledge and should not replace advice from your healthcare provider. Always discuss potential side effects and their management with your doctor before starting doxycycline.
