Sinusitis, or a sinus infection, is inflammation of the sinuses, air-filled spaces behind your cheekbones and forehead. Symptoms include facial pain, pressure, congestion, and sometimes fever or a cough.
Zithromax (azithromycin) is an antibiotic, and doctors prescribe it when a bacterial infection is suspected as the cause of your sinusitis. Viral infections, however, are more common.
- Zithromax is NOT a first-line treatment for sinusitis. Doctors typically try other treatments first, like decongestants and saline nasal sprays. Your doctor will assess your symptoms. They will determine if your condition warrants antibiotics, and if Zithromax is the appropriate choice. They will also consider any allergies you have. Zithromax is prescribed for bacterial sinusitis that doesn’t improve with other treatments. A prolonged infection (lasting more than 10 days) or worsening symptoms are key indicators. Severe symptoms. Intense pain, high fever, or severe facial swelling may also necessitate antibiotics.
Remember, antibiotics are not always necessary for sinus infections. Always follow your doctor’s advice and complete the prescribed course of antibiotics if they are given to you.
See your doctor for diagnosis. Don’t self-treat. Follow their recommendations carefully. They will guide you on the best course of action for your specific situation. Monitor your symptoms. If symptoms don’t improve or worsen, seek medical attention again.
